Area-315 maintains research in anomalies of all kinds of Object Classes in multiple types of sectors and floors, all specially designed for the contained anomalies. Containment uses highly specialized technology of the newest generations to assure successful containment and research without complications. Even though the security is extremely high, breaches do happen often, which leads to personnel being even more specialized in re-containing them without casualties.
The anomalies all vary in hazardous abilities but are to be considered dangerous and potentially lethal. Some anomalies are highly complex to understand, requiring years of dedicated research by personnel — a process ongoing to this day.
SCP-035 is to be kept within a hermetically sealed glass case, no fewer than 10 centimeters (4 inches) thick. This case is to be contained within a steel, iron, and lead-shielded room at all times. Doors are to remain locked, except to allow personnel entry or exit.
No fewer than two (2) armed guards are to be posted outside the containment chamber at all times. Guards must never enter the containment room under any circumstances. A trained psychologist is to remain on-site at all times.
Research personnel are strictly forbidden from touching SCP-035. The mask must be transferred to a new sealed case every two (2) weeks, and the previous case disposed of in a specially designed container at Site-██.
Anyone who comes into contact with SCP-035 while it possesses a host is to undergo immediate psychological evaluation, and if necessary, placed in isolation. All tests must involve only a single D-Class subject, with interrogations conducted exclusively via the viewing room.
Samples of the substance secreted by SCP-035 are to be collected only by a D-Class janitor equipped with a full hazard suit, and only while the mask is inactive. During containment breaches or related incidents, all assigned protocols are to be followed without exception.
SCP-035 appears to be a white porcelain comedy mask, though at times it will change to tragedy. In such events, all visual records—including photographs, video footage, and illustrations—are altered to reflect the new appearance.
A corrosive and degenerative viscous liquid frequently seeps from SCP-035’s eye and mouth openings. Contact with this substance results in progressive decay of any material until it liquefies into the same contaminant. Glass shows the greatest resistance, hence its use in containment. Living organisms exposed to the liquid experience identical decay, with no known recovery. The liquid is visible only from the front.
Subjects within 1.5–2 meters (5–6 ft) of SCP-035, or in direct visual contact with it, experience a compulsion to don the mask. When worn, SCP-035 superimposes its brainwave pattern on the host, erasing the original consciousness. The host decays at an accelerated rate but remains animated under SCP-035’s control, even beyond physical viability. Non-human subjects are unaffected.
Interviews with SCP-035 have yielded extensive information about other SCP objects and historical events, with SCP-035 claiming presence at many of them. It exhibits extreme intelligence, charisma, and apparent eidetic memory, scoring in the 99th percentile on all administered tests.
Despite this, SCP-035 is profoundly manipulative and sadistic, capable of inducing psychological breakdowns or driving subjects to suicide purely through conversation. SCP-035 asserts an intimate knowledge of human psychology and claims it can alter anyone’s mindset given enough time.
Additional: SCP-035 was recovered from a sealed crypt in an abandoned house in Venice, 18██. Current research focuses on further analysis of the substance secreted by SCP-035 and its psychological influence.
SCP-035-P-Alpha “Containment Breach”: In the event of a containment breach, the Anomalous Outbreak Intervention Division is to secure SCP-035 by either confining it in a sealed room until its host body decays, or by neutralizing the host and returning the mask to containment using a hazard suit.
If the breach poses extreme risk, the Elite Defense Unit is to be deployed. Following containment, SCP-035’s case must be replaced entirely, and testing suspended for several days.
Due to the incident (see Addendum 268-05 in the original document), SCP-268 is to be stored in a secure containment chamber. Tests are permitted only for senior memetic researchers. Current research priority is to develop countermeasures to SCP-268's effects. Secure handling procedures are intended to prevent recurrence of the incident.
SCP-268 is a tweed-wool newsboy cap, likely of Irish origin (late 1800s–early 1900s). The only marking is a small label in Middle Irish reading "The Garden is the Serpent's Place," which appears to have been sewn on at a later date.
When worn, SCP-268 renders the wearer effectively unnoticeable: observers ignore or forget the subject’s presence and can only recall a vague impression such as "a man with a hat." Observers can be prompted to remember seeing the subject but are unable to provide identifying details. Vocalization or direct physical interaction can temporarily restore noticeability. If kept actively engaged the wearer may remain noticed; otherwise observers slowly stop noticing again.
Effects can persist after roughly twenty (20) cumulative hours of wear, and in at least one case the effect became permanent (see Addendum 268-04). Electronic capture yields blurry or grainy imagery of SCP-268-wearing individuals, while sensors (motion, heat, weight) continue to register normally.
No final protocols have been issued yet; countermeasure development is ongoing.
SCP-378-A specimens are to be contained in a liquid-filled chamber equipped with a shower-like mechanism. The shower mechanism may only be used as part of controlled D-Class infection protocols. The chamber is connected to an automated detection and safety system that will immediately terminate a host if SCP-378-A activity is detected or suspected. Access to the chamber is restricted to senior memetic research staff and containment technicians with explicit authorization.
SCP-378 (the primary organism) is not maintained on-site due to clearance restrictions. Area-315 receives monthly transfers of SCP-378-A specimens only. SCP-378-A are obligate endoparasites resembling adult Scolopendra gigantea, produced asexually by SCP-378. These parasites replace higher brain function in suitable hosts.
SCP-378-A infects advanced primates (including humans, Homo ignotus, and Gigantopithecus sapiens). After infection, SCP-378-A integrates with the host nervous system by poorly-understood mechanisms, inducing brain death while preserving autonomic functions and sensory input. The parasite enables remote control of the host body.
Infected hosts exhibit an instinctive drive to travel toward SCP-378’s location at ████ preventing host transit is a primary containment objective. Research focuses on parasite physiology, control mechanisms and countermeasures. Once tests are completed, all infected hosts and on-site specimens are to be terminated and the containment chamber decommissioned.
SCP-378-P-Alpha — “Infected Host”:
Infected hosts may be preserved only for the duration of authorized testing.
Once testing no longer requires the host, termination is mandatory.
SCP-378-P-Beta — “Containment Breach”:
If an unknown number of SCP-378-A specimens breach containment and host status
cannot be determined, all personnel must immediately isolate. Any personnel not in
secure isolation are to be neutralized by the Hazard Neutralization Unit. For
large-scale breaches, deploy MTF Beta-7 (“Maz Hatters”) for full neutralization
and reclamation.
